A SuperMoon is the coincidence of afull Moon or a new Moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earthon its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunardisk as seen from Earth. The technical name is the perigee-syzygy of theEarth-Moon-Sun system. The term "SuperMoon" is not astronomical, butoriginated in modern astrology.

The association of the Moon with bothoceanic and crustal tides has led to claims that the SuperMoon phenomenon maybe associated with increased risk of events such as earthquakes and volcaniceruptions, but the evidence of such a link is widely held to be unconvincing.

The most recent occurrence was onJuly 12, 2014. The closest SuperMoon of 2014 will be on August 10.

The opposite phenomenon, anapogee-syzygy, has been called a MicroMoon, though this term is not aswidespread as SuperMoon.

The Moon that rises tonight(Saturday) is what has come to be called a “SuperMoon” — only hours from beingperfectly full and hours from one of the year’s closest approaches to Earth.

This combination makes the Moonappear bigger and somewhat brighter than usual, even for a full Moon. Andbecause the Moon always looks larger as it rises, Moonrise Saturday night mayshow off a Moon that appears about as big, bright and round as the Moon canget.

As the Moon rises in the southeast atSaturday evening (at 8:30 or so on the East Coast) it will move west across thedark heavens through the night and early morning before setting in thesouthwest on Sunday morning.

Astronomers caution that withoutspecial equipment it’s difficult for the average skywatcher to assess theMoon’s brightness or size. But a SuperMoon last year was reported to be about15 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than the year’s run-of-the-mill fullMoons, and many people may consider themselves capable of spotting a 30 percentboost in brightness.

Of course, the brightness of theMoon, as seen from earth, will depend, in part, on the sky’s clarity and theamount of cloud cover. If clouds do intervene, the next SuperMoon is not faroff. There will be one in August and another in September.

Rituals and Ceremonies During theSuperMoon
