History: This distant cousin of calcite, selenite belongs to theSatin-Spar crystal family along with Aragonite. Selenite (CaSO4·2H2O) is ahydrous calcium sulfate, as it is composed of oxygen, sulfur, hydrogen, calciumand water. It is a major rock forming mineral that produces massive beds,usually from precipitation out of highly saline waters.
