Pagan Studies ~ It’s October!

Durga Festival Begins - A great slayer of evil, Durga could help cut negativityfrom your life. Ask Her assistance today.

October, the tenth month of the current Gregorian calendar and thesecond month of Autumn's rule, derives its name from octo, the Latin word meaning "eight," as October was the eighth month ofthe old Roman calendar.

The traditional birthstone amulets of October areopal, rose sapphire, and tourmaline; and the calendula is the month'straditional flower.

October is shared by the astrological signs of Libra theScales (or Balance) and Scorpio the Scorpion, and is sacred tothe following Pagan deities: Cernunnos, Hecate, the Morrigan, Osiris, and theWiccan Goddess in Her dark aspect as the Crone.

During the month of October, the Great Solar Wheel of theYear is turned to Halloween (Samhain Eve), one of the fourGrand Sabbats celebrated each year by Wiccans and modern Witches throughout theworld.

In some Saxon calendars, allegorized by thefigure of a husbandman carrying a sack on his shoulders, sowing corn.

In other oldcalendars, the sport of hawking is represented.

The month for making beer, wine, cider, because of steadytemperature.

Sacred to Goddess Astraea, daughter of Zeus and Themis. She lived amonghumans in the Golden Age but when civilization deteriorated she withdrew to theupperworld.

This is the Irish month of Deireadh Fomhair. The Frankishname, Windurmanoth, means ‘vintage month’. American backwoods: Hunter’s Moon.Asatru name: Hunting.

Weather lore of October (NorthernHemisphere): the more bright red berries (haws and hips) that can be seen inthe hedgerows, the more frost and snow there will be the next Winter.

The second ‘Summer’ in October is called Indian Summerin America, St Bridget’s Summer in Sweden; in Italy, the Summer

of St Teresa; inGermany and Switzerland, the Summer of St Gall. In England, it is called StLuke’s Summer.

Much rain inOctober said to correspond with much rain in December. A warm October makes acold February.

If October bringmuch frost and wind,

Then are Januaryand February mild.

~TraditionalEnglish weather proverb

In October dungyour field,

And your land itswealth shall yield.

~TraditionalEnglish proverb

Birth flowers: Calendula and cosmos.

Birthstone: Opal, signifying hope. Said to bring bad luck to thosenot born in this month who wear it.

An Old English Tradition

Beadles andServants of the guild of salters attended a service at St Magnus church,London-bridge. Sir John Salter had been a good benefactor to their company, andhe ordered in his will that the beadles and servants should go three times eachin the first week of October and say to each other, "How do you do brothersalter? I hope you are well!"

October’s child isborn for woe,

And life’svicissitudes must know

But lay an Opal onher breast,

And hope will lullthose woes to rest.

Tasha's Astro Planner for October 2014

Look to the stars to see what light can be brought to yourevery day life.

Astrologically, this is a relatively vigorous month, with things to do and participate in.Retrograde Mercury and the two eclipses especially represent opportunities touse the energy represented by these astrological events. I feel that I do bestwhen I can make use of all that is given me to learn and grow as well as tocontribute my energy to the world as a whole. There are times to be active andtimes to go within. Astrology can help us to determine these as well.

Most of Octoberfalls during a retrograde Mercury, beginning on the 4th and stretching to the25th. There are good ways to use this period of seemingly backward movement ofthe planet of communications and the intellect, and as well there are thingsbest avoided. My rule of thumb is that if an activity begins with"re" you will benefit by pursuing it. For instance if you arethinking of buying something, this is an excellent time to do research. OnceMercury turns direct, you will be ready to purchase whatever it is you haveexplored.

There are twoeclipses this month as well. The Lunar Full Moon eclipse is on the 8th, theSolar New Moon eclipse is on the 23rd. Both take place during retrogradeMercury, influencing the effects desired from the energy at this time. Look tothe past for what needs to be eliminated during the Lunar Eclipse of the FullMoon. What can you lose? What can you put to rest from the past? With the SolarNew Moon Eclipse, think of failed attempts in the past and try again. These twoeclipses bring opportunities to redo past errors or make up for false starts.

From its beginningin Scorpio, Mercury moves back into Libra for two thirds of the month, bringingmore opportunities to pursue balance in thinking and communication. Venuschanges signs, spending the first three quarters of the month in indecisiveLibra and the last quarter in passionate Scorpio. The Sun moves into Scorpio onthe 23rd, and together with Venus in its first few days makes for an atmosphereof strong desire. Mars joins Pluto in Capricorn toward the end of the month onthe 25th, indicating that the potential for rebirth, renewal and restructurewill be high.

What is importantto remember is that regardless of the potential represented by any planet andits activity, the energy represented is ours to make the best of. There is nogiant named Mars or Pluto out there stomping around, no siren named Venus inScorpio, there are only the human beings who determine how energy will be usedor misused and what may be built of destroyed in the process. Days to bemindful include the 4th, the 7th,  the 8th and the 11th. Days to beenergetic include the 5th, the 8th, the 16th, and the 17th.

Health and Healing Arts ~ Sleep Is A Ceremony

Trouble Sleeping?Sleep is actually a Ceremony, a remarkable essential Ceremony in which weparticipate over and over again, for our entire lives, along with virtually allother Sentient Beings with whom we share this planet Earth, all other membersof the Sacred Circle of Life, as the Lakota Native Americans would say. As amatter of fact, the Universe itself participates in this Ceremony of restful"letting go", gently creating the appropriate backdrop for our Sleepby turning down the earth's lights and turning on the Heaven's Nightlights, quieting the daily noises and most of the earth's creatures, and often seemingto still even the very air and waters around us.

Many indigenouspeoples still believe that the Dream World to which we travel when we sleep andregenerate ourselves, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, may well be atruer "reality" than the everyday world in which we generallyfunction. Be that as it may, the fact is, in our busy, stressful society, manyof us struggle, occasionally or chronically, with Insomnia, meaning sleepdifficulties such as the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep or maintainingsuch a light, restless sleep that we do not feel refreshed and rejuvenated uponawaking.

Sleeping problemsmay occur for many reasons, including, according to Jethro Koss,in his book, Back To Eden "overeating, indigestion, eating late at night before retiring, stress, tension, worry, fearof something that might happen....cold feet, poor circulation, nervousness, andpoor ventilation in the bedroom." For some, specificconditions such as menopause, pregnancy, arthritis, or twitchy legs cause theproblem. For most non-sleepers though, it seems as though as we get into bed,the nervous system deliberately goes into overdrive, and we cannot release theconcerns of the day enough to quiet the mind/body and make ourselves open andreceptive to sleep.

Whether it is fearof entering the relaxed dream state or of fear of giving up control over ourdaily concerns, sleep eludes us and we remain overly alert and awake.

The Goddess Companion

In the rosy sky theGoddess appears,

like the sun atnoon, the moon at midnight.

As beautiful asheavens, she appears

to answer ourprayers through our dreams.

Holy Inannaobserves our actions

and gives good luckto the generous

and bad luck to theselfish.

Hovering like astar, she shine on us.

~Babylonian PrayersTo The Goddess

The CelestialGoddess appears in many cultures. Like Inanna in the prayers above, she is seenas a Sky Goddess who smiles down upon us, who sees our every move, who ispresent with us at all times. Sometimes she is described as the Sister of theEarth Goddess, sometimes as the mate of an Earth-God. The sun and moon areoften said to be her eyes, and the stars are the jewels that twinkle in herdark flowing hair.

Many times we hearthe Goddess described as associated only with the earth; the implicit orexplicit assumption is that the sky is the domain of the Father-God. Yet thisis not true in all areas or eras of the world. Just as frequently, the sky isdescribed as an overreaching Goddess who sustains us with her nourishing rain, who mothers us by providing the air we breathe. Welcoming the Sky Goddess intoour lives can remind us of how enveloped we are by the planet that mothers us.
