It is acommon ore of copper and is easily recognized because it tarnishes toiridescent shades of blue, purple, green and yellow earning its name, Peacock Ore.This cubic stone has a hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale. Bornite occurs widelyin porphyry copper deposits along with the more common chalcopyrite.Chalcopyrite and bornite are both typically replaced by chalcocite andcovellite in the supergene (occurring relatively near the surface) enrichmentzone of copper deposits. Please note: Peacock Ore is a term used to describeChalcopyrite or Bornite with a colourful iridescent tarnish effect, which isusually artificially enhanced with acid. Most PeacockOre is sold as a variety of Bornite, when infact most Peacock Ore is actually Chalcopyrite.
